Consider redoing list code.  I have some ready-to-go code in other projects,
so... let's just use it.

Write old and deleted files to package.old and package.del.

Write md5sums to package.md5.

Write the output of ls -lin to package.ls.

Detect shared files, such as /usr/share/info/dir.  Where should this be logged?

Look into applying some ideas from Matthias S. Benkmann's
more_control_and_pkg_man.txt hint, as an option, of course!
